This was a solid first episode. Basically the same as the synopsis, but it seemed well directed, and it was more than enough to make me want to see where this goes. Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou is about a boy that doesn’t wan’t to live with his Aunt and Uncle anymore but is in a bit of a pinch because the dorm he was going to live in burned down. So he finds a really cheap place to stay and the place he stays at is essentially haunted by youkai and ghosts.
The anime’s design closely adapts the manga’s art style, but enhances it by adding details like nostrils and lips for a more mature look. It’s a different move from the anime syle for the Alderamin anime, which used its own original designs far removed from the LN/manga versions. And we haven’t seen enough of the youkai to care about them, so ultimately this episode leaves me with not much more that I got from reading the premise. I suppose it’ll need some more time before I can say anything significant about it. Liked the OP and ED, though.
I think any youkai slice-of-life show like this is (unfairly) going to suffer in comparison with Natsume Yuujinchou (especially if it has the misfortune to come right after it like this one does), but so far I think this seems like it might be pretty alright. The general ambience is pretty relaxed, the art’s solid and the main dude is nicely expressive for being drawn in a relatively less stylised sort of way. And always it’s good to see Akira Ishida getting work, of course. I have been a huge fan of the manga for this anime for a long time. When I first read Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou it was generally because I was bored. I admit that I personally didn’t find the first chapter that engrossing. However this is a story that will grow on you! If you like Natsume Yuujinchou or Kekkaishi then this is the anime for you this season. I don’t think it will disappoint you if you just give it a chance.
