During the 40th edition of the annual Japan Academy Prize ceremony on Friday, the award association announced that Sunao Katabuchi’s Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of the World) is the winner of the Animation of the Year award.
The movie was nominated alongside Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.), Koe no Katachi, Rudolf to Ippaiattena, and One Piece Film: Gold in January. Nominated works must have premiered in Japanese theaters between December 16, 2015, and December 15, 2016.
Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni adapts the the manga drawn by Fumiyo Kouno. It premiered in Japan on November 12, 2016 and has earned over 2 billion yen so far. A crowdfunding campaign took place in 2015 that raised over 39 million yen, nearly double the initial goal, in order to help with the production costs at studio MAPPA. Animatsu Entertainment acquired global distribution rights and Shout! Factory licensed the film for North American release.
